Story
Day 1
“ | We're on board the fishing trawler Amaryllis, making our way through the very rough waters of the South Pacific. Down below, deep inside the hold of this ship, sixteen Americans about to be abandoned in the middle of the Marquesas, part of Tahiti's mystical islands. Thousands of miles from the nearest continent, this will be their home for the next thirty nine days. But this time the game is different. These survivors will be given no food, absolutely no rations! Each tribe will leave this ship with only the barest of essentials; two machetes, two cooking pots, two empty water containers, one frying pan, one filet knife and one magnifying glass. They'll be left to fend for themselves, using the resources of the land and their own survival skills. It is the ultimate challenge, sixteen strangers forced to work together to create a new society, while battling the elements and each other. They must learn to adapt or they'll be voted out of the tribe. In the end only one will remain to claim the million dollar prize. Thirty nine days, sixteen people, one Survivor! | ” |
–Jeff Probst |
The two tribes, already divided, are lead out of the ships hold, with Duana vomiting on her way up, clearly suffering from sea sickness. Upon reaching the deck of the vessel, the tribes separate to either side, grabbing their supplies and placing them on inflatable rafts below. For the Rotu tribe, Martin takes control, giving his tribe instructions on what they should place down first. Maraamu work together as a tribe, not letting anyone bark orders, with Ibrahim proving to be the biggest asset due to his size, lifting the crate of supplies without assistance. The sixteen contestants jump off the fishing boat into the water below, grabbing onto their rafts for support, before they begin paddling to shore in different directions, finally beginning their thirty-nine day adventure.
Maraamu
The Maraamu tribe all attempt to stay off the raft, with the exception of their smallest member Daisy, who they've picked to keep the supplies in place, with everyone else kicking in the water, trying to steer the raft towards their beach. Randy appears to be struggling early on, slipping under the water and jumping up to get air, pulling himself into the raft where he spits up some vomit from swallowing sea water. Hillary spots the tribe flag on a nearby beach, ordering the group to put in all their energy to get to their beach as fast as possible.
“ | I'm a massive fan of the show, and I've watched all the seasons. Having to start the game this way gave me flashbacks to the first moment of the show and I got all giddy inside (laughs). I'm so glad that we're playing the game out here, where there's a ton of water, because if we ended up in a desert I would just flop. Asian people don't do deserts. Unless you're Mongolian. But my parents emigrated from China, so Mongolia is a big no-no. | ” |
–Lotus |
“ | I was given the position of looking after the tribes supplies. I guess I didn't mind that because it means I could stay mostly dry. I can whip my killer swimwear out later on and make a bigger deal about it. But I didn't expect that I'd be resting my knees in some guys puke? Freakin' gross. | ” |
–Daisy |
- Last push guys.- Hillary
- I cant breathe... (gasps)- Randy
- Keep going man. C'mon keep going.- Ibrahim
- I cant... I... I cant... I'm sorry- Randy
Randy pulls himself into the raft, lying on his back in his own vomit, looking up at the sky panting heavily. Daisy looks horrified, not sure what she should be doing. The Maraamu tribe manage to keep going despite Randy already causing them problems, eventually reaching a point where the group can stand in the water and pull the raft ashore, with Hillary, Ibrahim, Troy and Lotus doing most of the work. After getting the raft stationary, the group get together and hug one another, introducing themselves to their new family, knowing that they could be meeting their closest allies, or worst enemies. Daisy stands up with her body language closed, clearly uncomfortable with the Randy situation. She steps over him, looking down at the site of him lying in vomit with horror, before going over to Ashley and hugging her. Ashley asks Daisy if she's ok, to which she laughs before the two look at Randy, who still hasn't moved from his position.
- Jesus Christ you're huge!- Troy
- (laughs) Thank you.- Ibrahim
- How tall are you man?- Troy
- I'm six-five.- Ibrahim
- Whoa. I mean I'm just about six foot but I try to make up for it with my width. I feel like an ant next to you.- Troy
- (laughs, somewhat unsure as what he should say)- Ibrahim
“ | I'm totally stoked with the group so far. I mean we've got the jolly black giant in Ibrahim. Screw the green giant this guy is the real deal. I thought coming out here I'd be the guy with the buff body and all the girls would wanna work with me. Then I see THIS guy. I don't know whether to rejoice at the asset or be mad at the competition I've now got. | ” |
–Troy |
“ | Coming out here I'm aware the social aspect of the game is going to be the most difficult for me. I don't want to say that I don't really talk to people, but I'm quite a shy guy. I spend my time at work just getting the job done, and then after I usually just work out, then go home to my apartment. I live in a state of solace and I love it, but its not wise for the game of Survivor. I'm hoping that the physical strength I give to the team will be enough to keep me around, but unless I work on how I'm going to present myself, and make sure I talk to people... then there's no chance I'm winning. | ” |
–Ibrahim |
Hillary walks over to a still lifeless Randy, placing her hand on his shoulder, asking if he's ok. He tells her that he's exhausted, and swallowed a lot of sea water. She asks if he'd be able to get up, as the tribe only have one chance to make first impressions, and claims that they'll need everyone to take part in order to have a unified group. Randy reluctantly agrees, getting up and walking over to the group, shaking hands with everyone, with no one willing to hug him due to the sick down his back.
“ | I work with a team of guys, and we drill for oil together. Its a close team and we know what it takes to have a unified group. I'm taking my experiences from work into the game with me because I know they'll be of use, and when you've got someone like Randy who is already placing himself up as the weak link who isn't willing to get involved in conversations, then you know someone like that needs to be integrated. Not only for his sake, but for all of ours. | ” |
–Hillary |
“ | I had a little trouble getting to shore in one piece. I don't really swim. I don't do climbing. I don't run. I live a very uneventful life and I like it that way. All of this is new to me and it'll take me time to adapt to it. | ” |
–Randy |
- Alright guys and girls. As we can see the sun is barely out, and if we don't get to work soon we're going to be stuck. I hate to be the one who says get moving but...- Hillary
- Nah I agree. Do you wanna have two people try for fire and the rest get going on a shelter?- Troy
- I think water has to be our priority right now. I'm sure nobody minds if we sleep on the beach tonight.- Hillary
- Yeah, we could have some people sleep in the raft.- Ryan
- (scoffs) I am not getting in that... Not unless its washed out and bleached.- Daisy
- Fine. Would two people be willing to clean out the raft?- Hillary
The tribe stand in silence, with no one volunteering to do the deed. Several eyes turn to Randy, with people hoping he'll agree to clean up his own mess, but he remains silent.
“ | I think we were all hoping that Randy would step up and volunteer himself... But he just stood there totally oblivious. So I threw my hand up and got on with it. | ” |
–Ryan |
The tribe applaud Ibrahim and Ryan, thanking them for doing the unappealing job. The two boys take the raft back to the water after unloading it, using their hands to wash out the puddle of sick, hoping that it will buy them favor with their tribe.
“ | Volunteering to do the job was a good move on my part. The tribe now see me as this good guy, which I believe I am. It means I don't have to be involved in any of the early small talk which I know I'd struggle with. I got to talk with Ryan a bit, he seems like a good kid. Talking to someone one on one is almost me swimming in the kids pool right now, kind of getting use to it before I take the plunge into the big pool with the adults (laughs) | ” |
–Ibrahim |
Hillary, Ashley and Randy sit together trying to get a fire going, with Hillary recommending that they use the magnify glass in order to set the wood and husk alight. Randy challenges Hillary's decision, stating that they may as well rub sticks together, as the friction will get the fire going before the magnify glass will. Hillary tries to explain to Randy that its unlikely that they'll be able to do that immediately, as she's seen it fail time and time again. However, Randy remains persistent, eventually walking off on his own to get some wood, attempting to get the fire going himself.
“ | When I was a young boy I did the scouts for a week before I quit because my leader was a pervert... I think he might have been a little queer or something. The one thing I remember is that this was the best way to get the fire going. Hillary insists that it aint but I know otherwise, and she's not going to get the job done with her silly technique. The same job that she said was so vital yet she's willing to wait another day until we get water. | ” |
–Randy |
“ | Randy has set himself up as the first boot for our tribe. I didn't know people could be that stupid but then again I hadn't met Randy until today. I can only hope that we lose early on so I don't have to deal with him for much longer. We're not going to win every challenge before the merge... so I'd rather remove him now rather than later. | ” |
–Hillary |
- Randy are you done trying that?- Ashley
- Nope... just... a... second.... (sighs and drops the sticks realizing its not working)- Randy
- Well?- Hillary
- Oh... I just realized they're damp.- Randy
- (sighs and shakes her head)- Hillary
By the jungles edge Troy, Lotus and Daisy stand together collecting pieces of wood for the fire. Troy decides to use the opportunity in order to make close bonds with his tribe mates.
- He is so gross. Like he vomited all over my clothes.- Daisy
- Yeah... You got some on your shirt I think.- Troy
- (panics) I did!?- Daisy
- Yeah. You might want to take it off so you can wash it later. (laughs)- Troy
- Oh you're so clever (laughs) ... I'll keep it on for now.- Daisy
Lotus rolls her eyes, finding Troy and Daisy's flirtation somewhat embarrassing.
“ | We've been on the beach for about an hour, and Troy is already trying to get into Daisy's underwear. I wouldn't be surprised if the two of them hit if off. He's buff and has the he-man look going on. She's gorgeous and has the most splendid pair of ta-ta's I've seen. Hell I fancy her a bit. Its all strategy for them though. They know exactly what they're doing and it'll work for them because on a tribe like this the older people are going to become the obvious targets. | ” |
–Lotus |
“ | I said before I came out here that I would flirt my way to the million. I didn't care who it was, but I would make them think I was into them and they'd let me get to the end. Its easier now that I've got so many hot girls on my tribe. I want to get going immediately with my strategy, and I'll use whatever charm I have to form a group with the others my age. | ” |
–Troy |
The tribe fail to start a fire, with the clouds blocking out the sun, preventing Hillary's plan from working. The group accept that they wont be drinking until day two, and all get together on the beach to sleep, with Daisy, Ashley and Troy sleeping in the raft. During the early hours of the morning it becomes apparent that Troy and Daisy are spooning, much to the amusement of Hillary, who decided to stay awake after noticing Ibrahim walking off down the beach alone.
Rotu
The Rotu tribe paddle to shore, clearly all struggling to work together well, appearing to be the physically weaker of the two tribes. Yuzuki, Ursula and Duana all get onto the raft one at a time, resting from the paddling, much to the annoyance of their tribe members.
“ | We're busting our butts first thing in this game, and we have three individuals give up and get on the raft, which already weights a ton due to all the supplies. They need to realize they're not supplies, they're workers just like the rest of us. I'm not a big guy! I don't have muscles bulging from my body... I can perform, but not with three heaps slumped on my shoulders. | ” |
–James |
- Wait... everyone wait... (pants)- William
- Whats wrong?- Alistair
- We're moving backwards. Y'all need to get out of the raft soon because we aint even gonna make it to the beach.- William
- (sighs)- Ursula
Ursula slides back into the water, with Duana and Yuzuki hesitant. The tribe decide to leave the girls, unable to get through to them. After a good half hour of paddling, the tribe make it to shore, all exhausted, with the exception of Yuzuki and Duana, who haven't had to work hard at all. The tribe begin celebrating with what little energy they have left. Yuzuki steps out of the raft to hug Alistair, but is suddenly attacked by him instead.
- No... not you!- Alistair
- Uh?- Yuzuki
- You want to sit on your ass and let us struggle, you're not apart of this team. Either of you!- Alistair
- ... Whoa whoa... Lets not fight guys. We just got here and we're going to work everything out.- William
“ | I'm in that water paddlin' like a dog! Yuzu... Yuzuka... Whatever her name is... and the bald black girl... They did nothin'. | ” |
–Alistair |
- I... I just not great at swimming.- Yuzuki
- Neither am I but I tried.- Tish
- I'm sorry. I'll try harder next time? Yes?- Yuzuki
- If you could that'd be great. We're all good now? Yes?- William
- Yeah.- James
- Good. What about you my sister? You ok?- William
William goes over to Duana, who is slouched over in the raft holding her stomach, clearly unwell. He helps Duana out of the raft, who ends up vomiting into the ocean, still feeling ill from the boat ride. William rubs Duana's back whilst she vomits, telling her not to worry and to get all her "badness" out of her system. James and Alistair pull the raft up further onto the shore in order to get it out the way, whilst the others watch on as William takes the lead.
“ | It became immediately apparent that when we got back Duana wasn't well. I think we all felt somewhat bad for calling her out on being "lazy", when she was suffering in silence. | ” |
–Tish |
“ | I uh... I haven't been feeling too hot today. I think it was the boat ride. Maybe the change in environment. Maybe the nerves. I'm not sure. I live in Atlanta and I don't ever leave, I mean the furthest from home I've been was Florida. This is a big deal for me and my stomach isn't feeling it. I'm worried because I wanted to come out here so bad and now I'm seen as the liability in the group. | ” |
–Duana |
- Before we all get started. I just want to say I'm so looking forward to hanging out with you guys. You know making some true human bonds here. You know please God let us do well in this (laughs)- William
- You're a preacher William right?- Ursula
- Yes ma'am.- William
- Well at least we've got God on our side (laughs)- James
“ | All this God stuff... its not for me. I didn't want to be stuck here with a bunch of wackos who praise God for everything. I think William said something about God getting us here. God didn't get us here, my damned paddling did. If God got us here he did a c**p job because it took us a good half hour longer than it should have. That aint no omnipotent force. | ” |
–Martin |
“ | I often get told I smile a lot (laughs). What can I say I get high off God. I've always known where my heart lies and its with Jesus Christ, you know I'm not one of those people who pull out Bible quotes on a daily basis, but I definitely feel we need to be reminded why we're all here. Religion is something to love and praise, not to be weary of. My tribe seem open to my ways and I'm happy with that because we need to be accepting these days, especially because everyone is so different and unique. | ” |
–William |
The tribe split off to fill certain rolls, realizing that after looking at their supplies they truly have little to live off. William, Duana and Martin stay together to get a fire going, whilst the rest of the tribe go off to gather supplies for the shelter. Whilst gathering supplies both Ursula and Yuzuki appear to be annoying the tribe. Ursula continues to laugh at everything she sees, with her deep sonorous laughter grating on Alistair, who tries to work in silence in order to get the shelter done before sundown. Yuzuki stands around for a majority of her time, unsure as to what she should be doing, receiving very little direction from her tribe mates. She attempts to form bonds with the tribe by displaying her friendly and excitable personality, but it only irritates them further, not understanding why she's acting the way she is.
“ | I try to show the group that I am... very, very happy and... excited to be here. I don't know how to cut wood or... uh... what supply be good for shelter. No one tell me what I should be doing. (sighs) | ” |
–Yuzuki |
- I'm so glad you're here...- James
- So am I. I cant deal with these people already...- Tish
- What the hell are we stuck with!? (laughs)- James
- The God squad and the misfits... That's literally our whole tribe.- Trish
- When I'm the most athletic guy here I know I'm in the s**t.- James
- Listen as long as you and I stick around together we should be good. I just pray that they all chill the eff out soon.- Tish
- I wouldn't count on it.- James
“ | I don't know how I'm going to survive this group of people. We've got the weirdest tribe in Survivor history. Two old guys, a wild preacher, a sick girl, an excited twelve year old... and Ursula. There's no point in having challenges because we wont come together to win anything. Unless its name that Bible quote or say the Japanese alphabet I think we're f***ed! (laughs) | ” |
–James |
“ | I'm glad to have James here because he's a similar age to me. He's kind of got this cute boy next door thing going on. He's someone I can talk to. I cant say the same for six others on this tribe. | ” |
–Tish |
- Oh guys I found some of that good wood! (she tries to swing her machete at it, but misses completely) Bahahaha! (her husky laugh continues)- Ursula
- (mutters) Oh God...- Tish
Back on the beach, William holds his glasses over some dried grass, hoping that the thin lens will set it alight, giving the tribe much needed fire. Duana and Martin sit and watch on, banking on William's technique to work.
- Please God. Almighty father. Bestow us with some fire (laughs)- William
- Please... please...- Duana
- Praying aint gonna work.- Martin
- Oh it'll work...- William
“ | I prayed for lots of stuff in my life. It don't work! There's nothing about it that works and you cant rely on it out here when you got nothin'. | ” |
–Martin |
Suddenly, the grass catches alight, with Duana moving it over onto the pile, slowly allowing a fire to appear, with William and Duana cheering at the site. Martin sits dumbfounded, unsure as to how it worked with only a little bit of sunlight.
“ | It worked this once. But its a fluke. I'm telling you. | ” |
–Martin |
“ | I think this has been a successful first day for the tribe. We seemed to work together quite well considering our slow start, and I'm immensely proud of myself for supplying us with fire. Alistair and James found the tribes water, and we got that boiling straight away. All had our first drink out here in the wild... it was good. We made some progress on our shelter, its not finished yet though. So tonight I suppose we'll sleep under what we have, and get to the hard work tomorrow morning. As a tribe we are truly blessed with our success today. | ” |
–William |
The group settle down under a semi-built shelter for the night, all extremely uncomfortable, having no support underneath themselves and the hard ground.
Day 2
Maraamu
Hillary spots Ibrahim down the beach on his knees, she wonders as to why he has risen so early, but decides to leave him on his own, waiting for him to return in his own time. Lotus gets up soon after, admitting that she couldn't sleep, and hopes that the tribe can get to work on a good shelter, as another night on the ground would be "hell".
- We've got to get the fire going today too.- Hillary
- Mmm yeah. If we don't then... I worry for us.- Lotus
- So do I. We've got the big guys but... without water we'll all drop down.- Hillary
“ | I like Hillary. There's something very matriarchal about her, and I think she's the perfect person to be leading this tribe. I find her terrifying because she's a bit like a Rottweiler. Loyal as hell but you know she is packing a bite. She'll be great in challenges and she's great around camp. I'm glad she's on my side in this. | ” |
–Lotus |
The rest of the tribe slowly get up, with Ibrahim returning to the group. Hillary asks Ibrahim if he's ok, to which he replies "I'm fine", saying he just needed a moment alone. With the group getting ready for the day ahead, Hillary decides to make use of the high sun, grabbing the magnify glass and sitting over the dry husk. After several minutes of waiting, the husk catches alight, giving the Maraamu tribe fire. The group celebrate, with Ibrahim, Lotus and Randy being sent off to collect water, taking the two empty canteens with them. Hillary stays to keep stoking the fire, with Troy, Daisy, Ashley and Ryan gathering supplies together for the shelter. Whilst in the jungle Troy once again tries to get a closer bond with the girls.
- How did you guys sleep?- Ryan
- Good. I had these two beauties keeping me warm so I was fine.- Troy
- I actually slept alright. I mean it was a bit cramped but... fine.- Ashley
- Is that going to be the only time we sleep together Ashley? (laughs)- Troy
“ | I cant help myself around Ashley and Daisy. They're both just slammin'. There's not a straight guy that wouldn't want to work with them. I think by flirting I give off a bit of a dumb guy act, and the girls think they can manipulate me. That's fine with me because it means I can work with them in the long run, and they wont be concerned with me outsmarting them when we get to the merge. | ” |
–Troy |
- How did you sleep Ryan?- Daisy
- Uh... alright... I guess... I mean I uh, would've preferred a shelter sooner but... whatever.- Ryan
- Ryan, why you getting so nervous?- Troy
- I uh...- Ryan
- Stop it Troy. Ignore him Ryan (laughs)- Daisy
- Dude you're going red.- Troy
“ | (sighs) Troy... Troy, Troy, Troy... He's such a typical frat boy. He sees me as this weedy smaller guy and wants to verbally abuse me I guess. Its the equivalent of throwing me in the locker, which most guys like him did in high school. Its fine, I'll be his punching bag... It'll make me feel less guilty when I vote someone strong like him out before we merge. | ” |
–Ryan |
Over by the water source, Ibrahim is filling up the canteens, with Randy and Lotus watching on. Lotus remembers how Ibrahim walked off in the early hours of the morning, and decides to ask where it was he went to.
- Where did you go this morning?- Lotus
- Huh? Me? Down the beach.- Ibrahim
- Yeah but what were you doing. Hillary was concerned you were... upset. Just want to make sure you're ok. I mean if you're not and you wanna talk I'm happy to listen.- Lotus
- I was... praying.- Ibrahim
- Oh... praying?- Lotus
- Yeah.- Ibrahim
- You're a ... Muslim then?- Lotus
- Yeah...- Ibrahim
“ | It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but I didn't want to reveal to the tribe that I am a Muslim, because I was worried that it would maybe cause some preconceived notions to appear in their head when they look at me, and to assume I'm maybe... someone to fear... the media hasn't been exactly positive around Islam for several years... With the attacks last month I felt maybe it was best not to bring it up at all, because it could definitely be a reason the tribe would turn on me. I don't think they would be angry that I'm not a Christian like the rest of them, but I think they could be somewhat resentful that there's a member of the 'other religion' here. The religion that's been shown to carry out terror attacks. They don't represent Islam for me, but not everyone is aware of that... and I have to be at peace with that. I'm sure if the media showed Christians doing the same I'd be a bit weary of them. | ” |
–Ibrahim |
- Whoa who is a 'Muzlim'?- Randy
- ... I am.- Ibrahim
- Wow. Really?- Randy
- Yeah. I hope that's ok... with you?- Ibrahim
- As long as you aint one of them terrorist types I'll be fine.- Randy
- Oh really Randy? Yeah I'm sure Ibrahim is a terrorist. I'm sure every single Muslim is a terrorist.- Lotus
“ | If there's one thing I hate its right-wing bull that certain religions, groups or ethnicities are dangerous or... wrong... or whatever. I am a liberal at heart and Ibrahim being a Muslim doesn't change any opinions I had on him. I thought he was a hot, sweet, gentle guy before... and I still think he's one now. If Ibrahim wasn't visually attractive I probably wouldn't be so passionate to defend him (laughs)... But no I'll always defend someone being criticized for aspects of themselves that are in no way shameful. Also Daisy and Ashley are getting all the attention from Troy so I need a little summin' summin' off Ibrahim (laughs). Randy just reveals new reasons to dislike him every day. Yesterday he was a complete train wreck liability, today he has religious prejudice... tomorrow he'll attack me for looking unfeminine with my short hair and body art. | ” |
–Lotus |
“ | I live in an all white town and I don't know many people of color or different religions. Sometimes there's this guy who comes into the store that looks like he could be Jewish maybe but I'm not quite sure. I don't ask questions into matters that I have no interest. Ibrahim is a Muslim and he uh, he prays a lot. I think once or twice a day maybe? I don't dislike Muslims but they definitely do have a different way about things. | ” |
–Randy |
The group bring the water back to camp, and immediately get it boiling, finally getting liquid inside them. With the group now hydrated they are able to finish building the shelter at a quicker rate, all pleased with their efforts, knowing that it might need touching up over the next few days.
- Its actually alright you guys.- Daisy
- Do you think it needs a better base?- Ryan
- We can fix that tomorrow if you guys are still up for it. We'll test this for tonight and see how it holds up.- Hillary
- Well. To our first creation as a tribe... Hopefully its the first of many.- Lotus
“ | I'm super happy right now. We have a great shelter, our tribe is great... We're strong... And we only have one person who needs to go home. Usually there's a misfit group of individuals who walk off on their own and hide due to their insecurities. With Maraamu there's only Randy. It would be nice if Randy was more insecure because maybe he wouldn't talk so much... | ” |
–Ashley |
“ | I do worry that I come across too strong as an individual, but we needed someone to step up and I took that role. We got things done and there's no one bitching so I can only presume what I did was a success in terms of distributing work. Everyone worked hard in their own right, and we've got a lot to show for it. Bring on the immunity challenge because we're ready to kick the other tribes butts. | ” |
–Hillary |
Rotu
James, William and Martin are the first tribe members up, sitting around the fire which William has lit for the group, hoping to work out what they're going to do about the food situation.
“ | As a tribe we were given no food. Absolutely nothing. Its day two and none of us have eaten in over a day, and its already starting to take its toll. There are stories of people fasting for weeks on end, but we don't particularly have the same will that those divine individuals had. I want to see if I can go out and find something for the tribe to eat before everyone gets up, and maybe I can take the roll as provider. | ” |
–William |
William heads off with Martin, leaving James alone to stoke the fire. James looks miserable, with his buff pulled over half his face, having gotten little to no sleep on the first night.
“ | Last night I couldn't get comfortable on the floor. To make matters worse I had Ursula next to me... and she kept... touching me... I'm not against someone touching me but it was just... odd... I mean she had her arm over my waist and she hadn't even spoken to me. She reminds me of my grandmother so that was just freaky. | ” |
–James |
Yuzuki is the next individual to wake up, walking over to sit by James. She begins talking to him about life back home, clearly trying to be friendly, although James tries to get her to lower her voice, with her volume waking up several tribe mates. Alistair and Tish wake up due to Yuzuki's noise, with Alistair looking particularly frustrated.
- Do you wanna keep it down?- Alistair
- I'm... I'm sorry...- Yuzuki
- Where's William and Martin?- Tish
- They went to get food...- James
- I mean you should realize we're trying to sleep... Don't just start RAISING your voice!- Alistair
- Alistair man, she was just talking to me... It's fine she didn't mean to...- James
- I just wanted to chat... Sorry. I'll be quiet?- Yuzuki
“ | It is annoying how Yuzuki makes all these mistakes. But you feel bad because she isn't doing it out of malice, she's just quite young and immature. She isn't from America and only emigrated recently so she's probably not accustomed to our ways. Alistair went off on one at her again and she looked horrified, I just wanted to give her a big hug. | ” |
–Tish |
“ | (with her eyes watering) I miss my family very much, and all I want is a friend out here to keep me company and to play this game with. Alistair constantly has a go at me and raise his voice. I get told I'm very energetic all the time and it rubs uh, people the wrong way. | ” |
–Yuzuki |
James decides to take Yuzuki and Tish off to the waters edge, seeing what kinds of fish they could potentially catch as a source of food, as well as a way of getting her away from Alistair. The three manage to spot some sea urchin, but realize that they should avoid them, not wanting to get stung. Yuzuki walks ahead on the rocks and finds several sea snails, collecting a handful and bringing them back to the group.
- I thought maybe we could have these?- Yuzuki
- Wow, great job girl. Where were these?- Tish
- They are all there.- Yuzuki
- Right under our damn noses... Good job.- James
“ | I found food! (she lets out a cheer). I hope this will make the group be kinder to me, and to see that I just want to help. I don't think Alistair, or 'Mister Grumpy' will. (she giggles) I like James and Tish, because they both talk to me and make sure I'm ok, and the others don't. But maybe because I got food this will change. | ” |
–Yuzuki |
“ | Yuzuki found us some food, and I hope this will make it easier to integrate her into the group. I've got to admit the tribe is a mess and a real clash of individuals, but that's the challenging bit... trying to get people from different backgrounds to come together and play this crazy game. Its not going to happen over night, but I think maybe by the end of this week we'll be a solid group... Well whoever is left will be a solid group. | ” |
–James |
By the waterfall, which is also the tribes water source, William and Martin look around for some protein after William claims to have heard a chicken clucking. Although Martin says he didn't hear it, he helps William look, but to no avail, with neither of them locating the supposed chicken.
- I swear I heard it...- William
- Well it aint here now...- Martin
- But I heard it a second ago... Please Lord point us the way...- William
- Yeah, yeah... Please Lord show me where the imaginary chicken is (slightly laughs)- Martin
“ | There aint no damn chicken. I swear we looked around for this thing and I didn't hear it once. William's been on one of those fishy looking plants by the jungle edge that look a bit like red cabbage. He's been on that and now he's hallucinating. Gotta love the guys enthusiasm though. | ” |
–Martin |
As the two men walk back to camp, they don't notice the chicken in the tree above them, missing out on the chance of finding the tribe a substantial amount of protein. Upon walking back into camp, the two men see Duana and Ursula sitting by the fire, with Duana still clearly feeling somewhat unwell. Martin goes to tend to the fire, leaving William to check on Duana with Ursula.
- You're still not feeling good?- William
- Nah... Its just my stomach... I don't know what it is...- Duana
- I think you need to get something to eat soon. We're all hungry and I don't know how much longer we can go.- Ursula
- Maybe this was a mistake...- Duana
- What was?- Ursula
- Coming out here...- Duana
- Dont you say that. I wont listen to it. We're going to get you better, and you're going to be a fighter.- Ursula
“ | Duana's case is extremely concerning, especially this early in the game. If she cant take the environment this early on then there's no way she can last thirty nine days. | ” |
–Ursula |
- Well I'm no doctor... but there is one way forward we could try.- William
- If you say pray I might just hit you (laughs)- Duana
- C'mon. Have a little faith in the big man.- William
- Fine...- Duana
Duana, William and Ursula join hands, with William asking God to give Duana the strength to fight off whatever bacteria is effecting her system, and for her to make a full recovery to the point where she performs to a high standard. William and Ursula end the prayer with an enthusiastic "Amen", with Duana reluctantly saying it after them, unsure as to how the prayers can help her recover.
“ | It is so disheartening to have come this far and to get to be in this game, only to go down with this illness. William and Ursula both seem concerned and want to help, but even if their prayers do somehow help me recover, I can never recover from two days of being incapable. That'll be in the back of their heads throughout this game, and it could give them a reason to vote me out later on because "Duana hasn't been working as long as the rest of us". | ” |
–Duana |
Yuzuki, James and Tish return with the snails that Yuzuki had found, boiling them as a group and sitting down to their first meal, although an unpleasant one, with no one particularly enjoying the snails. Duana appears happy to get some food in her, thanking Yuzuki for her efforts. The tribe continue working on the shelter for the rest of the day, with Yuzuki going off to collect more snails for the tribe to have a steady flow of food until they find something more appetizing. During the night, Yuzuki begins to cry and scream, frightening her tribe mates. She walks onto the beach and breaks down, having suffered from night terrors. Despite James and William trying to calm her down, medical is called in, trying to speak with Yuzuki so she can calm herself down. With Yuzuki gone from the shelter, Alistair decides to take the opportunity to voice his disdain towards her.
- I swear if that girl takes away another minute of my sleep...- Alistair
- She's having a panic attack. My niece use to get them at night all the time.- Ursula
- Well if she gets them all the time like your niece, then she shouldn't have come out here!- Alistair
- I do worry for her...- William
- I mean yeah she brings us snails... but is she really cut out to be here?- Martin
- I'm saying it now... if we lose she needs to be the first one to go. She's just not strong enough to be out here.- Alistair
Several members of the tribe nod along to what Alistair says, whilst others seem more reluctant, concerned with Yuzuki's situation as opposed to the thought of going to tribal council. Eventually Yuzuki returns to the shelter, apologizing for her panic, stating she had a bad dream and awoke feeling trapped, forgetting where she was. Ursula tells her not to worry, and decides to give Yuzuki her spot in the middle of the shelter, making her feel more secure. The tribe get back to sleep, with no more disturbances for the rest of the night.
Day 3
Both tribes are informed that they will be facing their first immunity challenge. Knowing that whichever tribe wins will gain momentum, both aim to win the challenge in order to prevent themselves falling into a losing streak. However, with both tribes identifying weakness, they realize that losing may not be a bad thing, as trimming the fat from their tribe will only make them stronger.
“ | If we win today then I think our suspicion that we're the stronger tribe will be confirmed. If we lose then maybe we'll vote out one of the girls, or maybe Ibrahim because no one quite knows what he's up to out here. | ” |
–Randy |
“ | As a tribe we're too dismantled right now to function. We've got sickness, weakness and idiots all around. Myself, Martin, William, James and Tish seem to be the only ones right now who know what we're doing, and if we need to lose three challenges in a row to become stronger then so be it. | ” |

Challenge: Quest for Fire
Carrying an outrigger canoe outfitted with two torches, the tribes had to swim with the canoe out into the ocean, light the torches from a fire cauldron, then race back to shore while lighting a series of torches along the way. The first tribe to have successfully lit all the torches and cross the finish line would win.
Winner: Maraamu
Information (Maraamu): Ashley, Hillary, Lotus and Randy perform well in the challenge, leading the tribe to victory. Daisy, Ibrahim and Ryan perform averagely, helping to carry the outrigger, but staying quiet, giving the tribe no direction. Troy performs badly, slipping and twisting his ankle during the early moments of the challenge, struggling for the rest of its run.
Information (Rotu): Tish, William and Yuzuki perform well, helping to carry the outrigger and giving the group the leadership it needs. James, Martin and Ursula help to hold the canoe, but don't give the group any guidance. Alistair and Duana perform badly, with Alistair proving to be one of the weaker males, and Duana still suffering from her illness, causing the tribe to lose.
Rotu
The Rotu tribe return to camp having just lost the first immunity challenge, with one of them now guaranteed to be the first individual to leave the game. Everyone looks disheartened upon return to camp, with the exception of William, who has managed to keep a smile on his face throughout the whole ordeal. With several members walking off to gather their things, James, Tish and Duana are left by the fire, giving them a chance to talk.
- I pretty much know its probably me tonight.- Duana
- Who says its you?- Tish
- I've been a liability since the start. I sucked today... I'm fine with it. I get it.- Duana
- There are people who I'd rather go over you to be honest.- Tish
- Like who?- Duana
- Alistair... he sucked today... he's a complete ass.- Tish
- Ursula too... I'm sorry but she just makes me uncomfortable.- James
- At least you're a normal person. I can talk to you without wanting to get away as soon as possible.- Tish
- Uh, thanks. So you guys know how you're going to vote?- Duana
“ | Tonight we've got so many options as to who we vote out. The only individuals I know that wont go home are myself, Tish, William and Martin. That's not us being cocky, its just us realizing that the other four have given real big reasons as to why they should go home. I personally would like to vote out Ursula due to her behavior and laugh which seems to echo around the whole island. But I understand she hasn't annoyed everyone to warrant enough votes. Duana and Alistair sucked today, so its likely going to be one of them... Unless I'm unaware and the group is doing something differently. | ” |
–James |
“ | I really did bad today. I cost the tribe the win, and I'm no use to them. I don't want to go home, and I want to stay in the game... But I'm ready to go because its the fairest outcome. Alistair helped us lose, but he works hard around camp. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with letting someone like that go home over me. | ” |
–Duana |
Over by the shelter, Alistair pleads his case to Martin and William, whom he hopes to get on his side. He tells the men that although they lost the challenge, they can turn it into a positive, by getting rid of one of their weakest members; Yuzuki. Martin mentions Duana's name, stating that her condition makes it unlikely she'll be of any use to the group. William agrees with both men, feeling as though either would be a good option, but wonders who would benefit them in the long run. Martin claims Yuzuki, as she has earned her keep by finding food, whereas Alistair says Duana, who he thinks will overcome her illness and be a greater asset in future challenges.
“ | Tonight I want Yuzuki gone. I don't care what the tribe does tonight, I'm writing her name down. She is so darned annoying and she actually is the biggest liability here, more so than Duana who cant do s**t. If the group want to vote out Duana then fine, I'll let Yuzuki know she's on very thin ice. | ” |
–Alistair |
Ursula sits with Yuzuki on the beach, asking her who she intends to vote, to which Yuzuki unsurprisingly says "Alistair", saying his attitude is poor and he performed badly in the challenge. Ursula agrees, feeling as though Alistair is a negative force on the tribe who will only poison them if he stays too long. Ursula and Yuzuki see the others talking, and agree to wait until Alistair moves away from the shelter, not wanting him to know that they are targeting him.
“ | Tonight I decided I'd go with the group. I love Yuzuki, and she wants to go after Alistair, which I completely agree with. Although I don't know where the other six peoples heads are at. For all I know they're voting ME out tonight. | ” |
–Ursula |
“ | I will be voting for Alistair tonight. He's not very nice, and has been uh, very, very mean to me and treated me badly. I don't mind him going because he's the only one here who I don't want to get to know. | ” |
–Yuzuki |
William goes over to the group by the fire, asking their opinion. Duana admits she's unsure, not knowing if anyone deserves to go over her, but that she would like to stay, and whoever the group decide she'll be happy to oblige. Tish recommends Alistair, with James feeling that voting out a hard worker first would only harm the tribe further. With the group unsure as to who to vote, they decide to talk in greater depth, trying to unify their decision. After somewhat agreeing on a name, William decides to go and join Alistair and Martin on looking for food, giving Yuzuki and Ursula a chance to speak with Tish, James and Duana. Tish is pleased to hear that the girls also dislike Alistair, causing James to go quiet, not sure how to detract the Rotu girls from wanting to vote a hard working individual out of the game. After many names have come onto the chopping block, the group get ready to leave for tribal council, hoping the tribe will be united in their first vote.
“ | This is the hardest part about the game. I don't want anyone to go. I've barely had a chance to get to know these people, and I'm unsure as to how they could benefit the tribe. I'm trying to be a utilitarian here... what would be for the greater good. Voting out Duana, who is sick but gets on with everyone. Voting out Alistair, who isn't that strong but works hard around camp. Voting out Yuzuki, who has the most beautiful sense of appreciation for her surroundings, but she seems to really be bugging several people. I don't know what I or the tribe will do. I think we need to be unified on this first vote, because we don't want any lose ends when we get back from tribal. | ” |
–William |
At tribal council James voices his frustration at the tribe being clearly weaker than their opposition, but says he appreciates the diversity, and that it could really prove to be a strength down the line. William is called out for being the tribe leader, with many praising his positive approach to things. Martin himself says he was concerned when he found out William was a "Bible basher", but says he's surprised at how useful prayer has been, and that William is helping to convert him into a "good Christian", evoking laughter from the tribe. Yuzuki and Alistair somewhat butt heads, calling one another out on their faults, with Ursula admitting it hasn't been an easy first few days, but hopes that a united vote will mean the tribe can move forward stronger. When asked what the group value more, strength or unity, there is a clear split, with the girls answering unity, and the boys answering strength, with James saying unity doesn't matter "if you only have three people left on the tribe". Duana is then called out for her illness, to which she admits she wouldn't be surprised or hurt if she goes home, as she would probably consider voting herself out if she was one of the others. After a long and deep discussion, Duana commences the voting, with everyone on the tribe going up to cast their first vote. Jeff collects the urn, bringing it back, with everyone hoping that there wont be any surprises at the first tribal council.
- First vote... Yuzuki.- Jeff Probst
- Second vote... Yuzuki. That's two votes Yuzuki.- Jeff Probst
- Third vote... Alistair.- Jeff Probst
- Fourth vote... Yuzuki.- Jeff Probst
- Fifth vote... Yuzuki. That's four votes Yuzuki. One vote Alistair.- Jeff Probst
- Sixth vote... first person voted out of Survivor Marquesas... Yuzuki. You need to bring me your torch.- Jeff Probst
Yuzuki burst into tears, clearly hurt that her tribe would select her to go over negative presence Alistair. Ursula apologizes to Yuzuki as she stands, but is ignored, with Yuzuki not looking at her tribe mates as she hands her torch over to Jeff, wiping her tears on her jumper. Yuzuki leaves the tribal council area, with the group hearing her cry as she walks off, causing Ursula and William to become emotional. Alistair smiles at the site, glad to see that the tribe backed him up. The Rotu tribe head back to camp, hoping that the unified vote will bring them closer, and strengthen the group for the future.

–Duana |
“ | Sorry Yuzuki. You're uh, a really sweet girl... but we've got to keep the hardest workers. I know you wanted to prove yourself, but we worry you'll crack. | ” |
–James |
“ | Hun you are a nice enough girl, and I would've liked you to stay over Duana, but I gotta stick with the tribe. | ” |
–Martin |
“ | If I was less concerned about unity I'd have sided with you tonight and helped get rid of Alistair. But I know if I did that I'd just put a target on my head. Sorry girl. | ” |
–Tish |
“ | My sweet Zu-zu... I'm so sorry. You know I love you and care about you, but I just don't think you're cut out for this game. | ” |
–Ursula |
“ | I'm very sorry to cast this vote against you. You're a wonderful little spirit and you have a heart of gold. In three days you spread your love around you camp and it was very nurturing, and I know anyone who comes across you will be lucky to experience the company of such a pure soul. God bless. | ” |
–William |
“ | Alistair, you weren't nice to me from the start. I am sorry for your anger problem. | ” |
–Yuzuki |
Final Words
“ | I, I don't understand (she sobs). I found them snails and I try to be very, very nice to them. Alistair was horrible to me and they kept him here. The girls said they didn't like him but they still voted me out? I don't know why... Uh.. Uh... I just want them to be happy and hopefully Duana gets better soon. | ” |
