Carlson is a contestant and the Sole Survivor from Survivor: The Australian Outback. He later competed in Survivor: All-Stars.
Despite being a quieter member of his tribe in The Australian Outback, Carlson began working behind the scenes, finding partnerships with both Alia and Chelsie. He utilised the dysfunctional nature of the Kucha tribe to work his way to the top, removing weaker players who had no loyalty to himself. Despite generally being well-liked, he found a rivalry with Reniero, who he often clashed with after Reniero branded him "dangerous", comparing his style of play to a previous contestant. After losing Chelsie at the merge, Carlson and Alia did well to avoid being perceived as threats by the other tribe, staying in the shadows whilst others were picked off. Eventually, he played a role in convincing Curt and Victor to switch allegiances, giving their side the majority. At the final five, it became apparent that Carlson was running the game, but this realisation came too late, with Carlson able to slip into the final two where he beat Alia to become the second Sole Survivor in a landslide 6-1 vote.
He later returned for All-Stars, where his history of being a past-winner led to an attempt to play a more under the radar game. However, he was unable to escape the baggage that came with previously winning the game, and became collateral damage after previous comparison Ben took control of the Chapera tribe, voting him out in a 4-2 vote at the second tribal council of the season. He became the first Sole Survivor to ever be voted out of the game.
